Behind She Is Known: The Woman at the Piano

Some paintings I have to chase. This one arrived almost fully formed: a woman seated at a piano, mid-profile, caught in the kind of quiet that only happens when someone thinks no one is watching. I knew before I touched a brush that her name was She Is Known and once I knew that, everything about how to build her fell into place.

I want to take you underneath this painting, layer by layer, because almost nothing that gives it meaning is visible on the surface. That's how I work, and it's the whole point of this one in particular.

It begins with Psalm 139

Before there was a figure, before there was a single stroke of the piano, I wrote Psalm 139 directly into the ground of the canvas. O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You can't read it ifully in the finished painting. It's buried under everything that came after. But it's the foundation the entire image rests on and it's where the title comes from.

That psalm is about being fully seen and fully known, down to the words on your tongue before you speak them. A woman alone at a piano is one of the most unseen moments I could think of and laying that psalm underneath her was my way of saying: she is not unseen at all. She never was.

The Story:

She reads the old hymn "Search me, O God, and know my heart".

Her heart cries out. And it's in this moment He whispers to her:

I know you. I created you. I know every part and every piece .. things seen and unseen.

In that moment her heart swells in worship and adoration for the One who has seen and known her from the beginning. Who has a plan and a purpose. The seasons she walked through the ones that felt broken, the ones that felt dead.. they weren't. They were seasons of preparation.

The King of Kings. The most loving Father. He knows her. He sees her. He has been, is, and will be with her to the end.

She is no longer alone.

She is known.

Who she's for

I make these for a particular person usually somewhere in the middle of life, who has carried things, who is drawn to a painting for reasons they can't quite name.
